NEDAW Scale Bashing

ANAD Scale Bashing

Scales Bashed at ANAD Group

The Santa Barbara ANAD Group had a powerful experience bashing scales in honor of NEDAW (National Eating Disorder Awareness Week).  For many people their identity has been defined by numbers.  Every day, the media inundates us with new numbers, standards, and measures for perfection.  We are constantly given the message that we need to lose weight fast in order to be beautiful, successful, and desired.  We are told that we aren’t good enough just as we are and that we are in constant need of remolding.

For many with an eating disorder, the scale becomes their barometer for perfection or failure.  A number tells them whether it’s going to be a good day or a bad day, whether they deserve to relax or whether they must run six miles.  The scale is given the power to condemn or to absolve.

Last night, the ANAD group spent time expressing their feelings about scales by writing directly on them and then bashing them to pieces with a hammer.  We put the scales in their rightful place; a cheep piece of metal or plastic.  What an empowering experience!
